the-Tragic-couple
the two families had quarreled over
something. No one could recall exactly what had happened. But since that time no Capulet had any use for a Montague. No Montague could tolerate the sight of a
Capu let. Members of the two families often had street fights. Members of both families had died in these fights.
2 Romeo was a Montague. He was
handsome, young, and mischievous. One evening he and two young friends adorned masks to disguise themselves. Then they sneaked into a masquerade ball at the Capulets’ palace. In disguise Romeo danced with a young woman he had never seen before. He did not know her identity. He only knew that she was beautiful and she smiled at him. He fell in love with her instantly. later he learned she was Juliet, daughter of the Capulets! She was a member of his family’s greatest rival. Yet he could feel no hatred for her. He was captivated by her innocence, and could not stamp her beauty from his memory.
Romeo could not stop thinking about his beloved Juliet. He didn’t care that she was a Capulet; he loved her anyway. One night he slipped into the Capulets’ garden and gazed up at Juliet’s window. Juliet, roused from sleep, appeared at the window. Romeo called to her, and revealed himself. He confessed his love to her. She replied that she had fallen in love with him too. She didn’t care that he was a Montague.
4 They knew their families would never agree to let them marry. So they decided to marry secretly. A friendly monk, Friar
Laurence, married them the next day. But as Romeo was leaving the wedding, he was caught in a street fight. One of his best friends was fighting with Tybalt, a member of the Capulet family. Tybalt killed Romeo’s friend. In the heat of the moment Romeo accidentally killed Tybalt. Romeo had to
leave the city to escape punishment. So he deserted his new bride, hoping he could return to her soon.
Now, Juliet’s parents intended for her to marry a man named Paris. They would not permit her to refuse. They were already preparing for the wedding. Meanwhile, Juliet had secretly married Romeo. However, she was afraid to tell her parents. What was she to do? She turned to Friar Laurence for help. 6 Friar Laurence had an idea. He gave her a sleeping potion. He instructed her to drink it. “It will put you in a deep sleep,” he said. “But you will appear to be dead. Thus there can be no wedding. Your family will take your body to the family tomb. I will send a message to Romeo. I will tell him what has really happened. When you wake up, Romeo will come to get you.”
juliet did as he said. She drank the potion. She fell into a deep sleep and seemed to be dead. Filled with grief, her family took her to the tomb. But a terrible thing happened. Friar Laurence’s message never reached Romeo. Instead Romeo heard that Juliet was dead, and he believed that she really was dead. He went to the tomb and saw her lying there. Heartbroken, he drank the potion, and died by her side.
8 juliet awoke from her death-like sleep. She found Romeo’s body beside her. She, too, was overcome by grief. Not knowing what to do, she took her life. The innocent Romeo and Juliet had not realized the truth. When the bodies of the young couple were discovered, the truth was finally revealed. The Montague and Capulet families saw their silly feud had led to tremendous tragedy. They forgave each other. The quarrel that had lasted so many years had ended. But it was too late for Romeo and Juliet. Their love had finally brought peace between their families. But the price of peace was grave and tragic.
