Michael demonstrated normal cognitive abilities through the administration of the WIAT-II. Michael achieved a total composite score that was in the low-average range when compared to other children his age. Specifically Michael scored in the low-average range on the Reading and Oral Language indexes. In contrast, Michael scored in the average range on the Mathematics and Written Language indexes. Within the Reading Index, Michael experienced more difficulty on tests of phonological awareness, word recognition, and comprehension of read content; however he demonstrated personal strength in the area of phonetic decoding. On the Oral Language Index, Michael scored in the bellow-average range, showing that he struggles with tasks that require him to match pictures with corresponding words or details, match topics, repeat sentences, and tell stories based on pictured events. Although Michael scored in the low-average range on these two indexes, he performed slightly better on the Mathematics Index and the Written Language Index. Michael scored in the average range on the Mathematics Index, demonstrating a personal strength in his ability to identify and write numbers, solve written calculation problems, and follow visual prompts to reason mathematically. Michael also scored in the average range on the Written Language Index, where he demonstrated his proficient ability to express automaticity in writing words, sentences and paragraphs, and spelling dictated letters, letter blends and words.
