The results of the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal revealed that 60% of the 3rd
grade teachers had below or significantly below average levels of emotional intelligence.
Goleman (1995) contends that with appropriate training and support, individuals can
learn skills to improve emotional intelligence. With that being said, it would be
beneficial to determine the types of professional development opportunities that these
teachers were exposed to or attended. Recommendations for future studies include
broadening the scope of research to include a larger sample of teachers from multiple
grade levels from both Title I and Non-Title I schools. Indicating levels of education and
how Nationally Board Certified teachers emotional intelligence scores compare to Non-
Nationally Board Certified teachers is another area worthy of exploration. Additionally,
further research should be conducted to determine if there is a correlation between years
of teaching experience and levels of emotional intelligence.
