The two major methods of planting followed in countries like India are the
Pit and the Row systems.
Pit system
This system is followed for rain-fed crops and adopts a wider spacing.
Instead of ploughing the entire fi eld, pits of standard size (40 × 40 × 40
cm) are dug with an inter-plant and inter-row distances of 90 × 90 cm for
a bush type of cultivation, 180 × 90 cm for high bush cultivation and 270 ×
270 cm for a tree-type plantation. Equal quantities of organic manure, red
soil and sand are placed in each pit after mixing and a cutting or a sapling
