The position or the maturity of bulbils where bulbils were
formed at the middle 2/3 position of the stem (mature bulbils)
and bulbils formed in the upper 1/3 position of the stem below
bracts (immature bulbils) and plant growth regulator treatments
did not affect shoot emergence and flowering (Table 6). Shoot emergence
and flowering were affected by irradiance. Treatment in both
mature and immature bulbs with benzyladenine (BA) reduced the
number of flowers. Except for BA treatment, however, mature bulbils
produced more flowers (1.5–1.8) as compared with immature
bulbils (1.0–1.6). Plant height and the number of leaves were also
affected by maturity; taller plants and more leaves from mature
bulbils as compared with those from immature bulbils. Bulbils
treated with BA were shorter in general as compared with control
and gibberellin (GA3) and indole acetic acid (IAA) treated bulbils.
The effects of irradiance were significant on shoot emergence and
flowering and also the number of leaves, but not the number of
flowers and plant height (Table 6).
