For the analysis of electromagnetic transients of a power
system, three different models for an ac electric machine are
available. These models include 1) the phase-domain (PD)
model; 2) the voltage-behind-reactance (VBR) model; and 3)
the dq0-based model. These models can be mathematically
derived from each other and provide identical simulation results
for balanced and unbalanced operational scenarios provided
that the simulation time-step is adequately small [15]. Since
the time-step of the envisioned FPGA-based simulator can
be in the order of nanoseconds, the selection of the machine
model to be implemented in the simulator is judged based on
its adoptability for FPGA implementation and its suitability for
parallelized analysis.
