The health tasks for the 2003 assessment were developed
to fit into the NAAL’s prose, document, or
quantitative scales but were distinguished from the
other tasks on those scales by their health content.
■ The prose literacy scale measured the knowledge
and skills needed to search, comprehend,
and use information from texts that were
organized in sentences or paragraphs.
■ The document literacy scale measured the
knowledge and skills needed to search, comprehend,
and use information from noncontinuous
texts in various formats.
■ The quantitative scale measured the knowledge
and skills needed to identify and perform computations
using numbers embedded in printed
materials.
