Extended SD periods resulted in an increasingly constrained
growth habit that was particularly marked at 15 8C (data not
shown). Subsequent growth and flowering were strongly affected
by both duration and temperature during the SD induction period
as well as by photoperiod during forcing (Fig. 6). As in the first
experiment, 5 weeks of SD induction had no inhibitory effect on
subsequent petiole and inflorescence elongation in LD, whereas
SD conditions strongly restrained their growth (Figs. 7 and 8).
However, extended SD induction at 15 8C to 10 or 15 weeks
resulted in strong and increasing growth inhibition of both
cultivars, whereas extended SD exposure at 6 8C had no such
inhibitory effect but rather stimulated leaf and inflorescence
growth even under SD conditions (Figs. 6–8). All these effects
