These results are in line with findings from a study by Vitaro, Tremblay, and Bukowski (2000) that the presence of non-antisocial friends can counterbalance the negative effect of antisocial friends on early adolescents’ own behavior. Nevertheless, there were relatively few children in the present study sample whose nominated best friends were high in both antisocial and prosocial behavior. Caution is therefore warranted when drawing conclusions regarding the comparative influence of antisocial versus prosocial friends where both are present. We also do not know whether these moderate antisocial/high prosocial friends were individuals who demonstrated both types of behavior or whether they were separate individuals with different behavior characteristics. Future studies should examine the potentially different consequences of having friends who demonstrate relatively high levels of both antisocial and prosocial behavior versus having some friends who are highly antisocial and others who are highly prosocial.
