2.2.8. Suprathreshold testing
In order to assess perceived intensity, we conducted suprathreshold intensity testing. For this testing method we used a 110 mm labeled magnitude scale of perceptual intensity that uses a quasilogarithmic spacing of verbal labels ranging from “Barely Detectable” to “Strongest Imaginable” taste. Participants were instructed to draw a line on the scale indicating how strong they found the solution they were sampling and told that “Strongest Imaginable” referred to the
most intense sweetness or fat they could ever imagine experiencing.
We used concentrations for sucrose (10.0, 20.0, 40.0, and 80.0 mg/ 100 ml of water) and fat (17%, 25%, 33%, and 38%). The stimuli were expectorated or swallowed as described above.
