Would you be serious about a film where a man competes with a dog to inherit 3000 crores? It’s not meant to be taken seriously, agreed. It's a campy premise one that makes plenty of room for gags and set pieces. But it plays out longer than it should. And in the process it gets cringe inducing. Most of it is straight out of the looney toons. But that’s what Entertainment is. It’s a film stuffed to the gills with corny humour. It's bad, in fact it’s so bad at one point, briefly, it actually becomes good.

But it's certainly not consistent. The first half of the film is a painstaking process of introducing the characters. Writer and director duo Sajid Farhad spend too much time establishing their characters and story. That they're attempting a rare genre in Hindi films, parody is novel. Full marks to the intent. But their execution is horrendously off the mark. The parody, the satire and the mad cap comedy comes to the fore only in the second part of the film.

You don't need an hour to establish the wafer thin plot of a rich guy leaving his empire to his pet dog. While the illegitimate son is left drafting plans to get rid of the heir and have the riches to himself. It should be over in a snap, making room for the goofball comedy that could ensue. Because that's what makes the latter part of the film funny. Akshay Kumar, Prakash Raj, Sonu Sood and the dog named Entertainment play out some cat and mouse games which are truly hilarious. But it’s a classic case of too little too late. Even Johnny Lever's priceless histrionics aren't enough to save the day.

Sajid Farhad treat this caper like a mindless Priyadarshan comedy. Good job on that. But just when the gags are getting good it commits the cinema sin of melodrama in the final act. What starts off as a ludicrous comedy actually musters some steam only to fizzle out in a clichéd family-friendly climax.

Akshay Kumar though sails through the film with a poker face. The star has an undeniable talent of doing the most insane farce with a straight face. Krushna though over acting throughout, actually has some skillfully silly dialogue. Stuff like “I Rajnikant (can’t) believe it” and “Humari Maa-dhuri ho jayegi” is funny at times. Johnny Lever and Prakash Raj are the old guard of comedy and don’t disappoint. Tamannaah and Mithun Chakraborty lend able support too.

Good parodies are the ones that make most of their tongue-in-cheek flavour. Add too much slapstick and it only gets more annoying. That’s entertainment. It treads a thin line. And in our industry it's a habit to fall off the line, too often, too easy.
