Today we have the human genome mapped. As we continue our research in this area, we
gain the ability to screen and identify individuals who possess genes that predispose them
to certain diseases. Knowing who is predisposed to various diseases will enable us to
focus our preventive efforts on those who are most at risk. Our understanding of the
genome will enable us to refine our treatments. We will have the ability to develop some
treatments that target affected genes while still other treatments can be optimized for an
individual patient, based on what we know to be effective for someone of their genetic
make-up
