As evident from injury data across 15 electric utilities, serious
work-related burns that result in days lost from work are
relatively rare in this workforce. Burn and electric shock
injuries represent 3.7% of all injuries, and the vast majority of
these injuries involve less than 1 day off of work. However,
burn-related injuries account for nearly 13% of all medical
claim costs, suggesting that there are a small number of costly
burn-related injuries.
Our observation that males have higher rates of burnrelated
injuries than females is consistent with other studies,
which also found a higher incidence of occupational burnrelated
injuries in males [2,3,18–20]. This increased risk
reflects the fact that males typically work in the higher risk
occupations, involving work activities that expose them much
more frequently to high voltages, electric currents, equipment
and machinery, than female workers. Because the number of
female workers in these occupations is small and because
burns are so rare, analyses specific to females in these highrisk
occupations were not feasible.
Among this population of electric utility workers, workers
in their thirties and forties had the highest injury rates. The
rates for these age groups are slightly higher than those
reported by Hunt et al. and Baggs et al., who both concentrated
on a broad cross-section of workers versus industry-specific
workers [5,21]. Other studies have found that younger age
groups experience higher rates for work-related burn injuries
[19,20,22]. When examined by age group, the FTE loss rates
differ by type of burn, but in general, workers in their thirties
have the highest FTE loss rates as well. This age variation may
reflect the fact that younger workers in the electric utilities are
still involved in training (e.g., apprenticeships) or are probably
not performing higher risk work compared to the more
experienced workers.
As expected, the trade professions (e.g., welders, line
workers, electricians, meter readers, mechanics, maintenance
workers, and plant and equipment operators) experienced
