The surge comparison test of a stator winding before
VPI verifies the integrity of the turn insulation of each coil
before connections are completed and winding is locked in
place by VPI. The inspection of the stator core before
winding verifies the absence of proud burrs or smeared
laminations in the slot that can easily damage the insulating
tapes during coil insertion. Winding inspection verifies
that correct coil-to-coil clearances, end-winding
connection bundles, and electrical connections have been
made. Special surge tests are done per [13] and [14] and
use the same equipment and techniques as for the system
validation turn-to-turn test, except that there are only two
sample coils, and it is not necessary to take them to
destruction. Not all manufacturing facilities will have the
equipment required to complete the full range of tests;
therefore, if these tests are to be witnessed, the purchaser
can expect to travel to a test lab separate from the manufacturing
facility.
