as observed, what is sure to be found in the intonation of Thai speakers in the sharp, clear-cut, up-and-down pitch contour. This is mainly the result of the Thai tonal pitch which is located on single syllables instead of groups of syllable as in English, and partly, of the Thai syllable juncture, and the tendency to group syllables into larger units before pause. It should be noted, too, that deficiency in reading ability may also be a cause of staccato English pronunciation of Thai students.
