This retrospective pays a special tribute to the late Malaysian filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad (1958–2009), who was a discovery of MoMA’s ongoing ContemporAsian film series in 2008. By popular demand, MoMA presents the full version of her critically acclaimed Orked trilogy—Sepet, Gubra, and Mukhsin—along with a weeklong run of her final film, Talentime. Called the godmother of the new Malaysian digital cinema, Ahmad created films that drew from experiences close to her own life. Her Orked trilogy, set in one of today’s most culturally diverse societies, deftly navigates conflicts of color and creed, prejudice and taboo.
