The TRANSFAIR study of European
intakes in 1995/96 estimated that average consumption of TFA in
14 countries was 0.5–2.1% of total energy intake in men and 0.8–
1.9% in women (Hulshof et al., 1999). While average population
intakes were below or close to recommended intake limits the concern
that significant proportions of the population may have been
consuming high quantities of TFA led to interventions to reduce intake
in some countries (L’Abbe, Stender, Skeaff, Ghafoorunissa, &
Tavella, 2009).
