The first part of the IP address locates the network the host belongs to, while the second part locates the
host inside the network. The lengths of the sections destined to locate the network and the host vary
according to the cases.
Since the number of possible IP addresses is very high, and each host has to have a univocal address, the
management of the assignations of the IP addresses is made in this way:
The assignation of the network address is made by a single worldwide entity (the Internet Network
Information Center: InterNIC) which provides each network to have a univocal address.
The assignation of the host numbers inside the network is made by the network administrator.
Each Internet Service Provider ISP) receives from the InterNIC one or more network numbers and
provides then to assign the host numbers inside these networks.
The IP addresses can be divided into 5 different classes.
