Dioxins
Burning some plastics commonly found in municipal waste, like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), can create Dioxins and Furans. These are a family of similar chemicals which are highly toxic pollutants. Exposure to these chemicals has been shown to cause cancers, as well as having other negative health effects.
Dixons are unintentionally produced as a result of poorly operated incinerators. They can be avoided by either operating in the correct combustion environment or by post combustion heat treatment. Three factors are important: high combustion temperatures (greater than 850°C, sufficient combustion time (at least 2 seconds) and good distribution of heat within the firebox.
