A daily dose regimen for gentamicin was piloted in a
randomised trial in Kenyan infants less than 3 months of
age. A regimen that consisted of a loading dose of 8 mg/kg
followed by 2 mg/kg (if weight ,2 kg) or 4 mg/kg (if weight
.2 kg) in the first week of life, or 4 mg/kg (weight ,2 kg) or
6 mg/kg (weight .2 kg) resulted in a higher proportion of
initial gentamicin concentrations within the therapeutic
range and a lower rate of potentially toxic gentamicin
concentrations, than a three times a day dose schedule.
