Whether or not there is a full-time lab coordinator or TA, training for all teachers and lab assistants is crucial. Before opening the lab, in-services should be planned for teachers and lab assistants. These training sessions should include basics such as turning on and off the computers, booting programs, and simple technical troubleshooting. Teachers should also be familiar with the software programs before taking their students to the lab. It is best if teachers have access to the lab or other computers located at the school to review the software available in the lab; this means having copies of the software available for them to check out. An introduction to the use of common computer applications such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint as a component of the ESL curriculum is helpful for teachers as well. Also, plan to provide for ongoing training and introduction of new software as it is obtained.
