I met Katy, Emily and Victoria (other girls from my program) at Starbucks essentially across the street from where our orientation was held and where we’d all actually be day to day in our internship. We sat next to some other girls we could only assume were part of the internship program as well. And we were correct! We all headed over into the Victor building and up to the 3rd floor where we sat in the Director’s conference room around a long board room table. Judith, the internship coordinator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), began orientation with paperwork and packets of information regarding what it means to be an intern. I was pretty familiar with the forms and the guidelines as the National Museum of American History (NMAH) had a lot of similar, if not the same, forms. One of the forms went over the social media policy of being an intern. As an intern, I am representative of the museum, the larger Smithsonian, and whatever actions or words I do have the possibility of serving as a reflection of the museum. It is pretty much common sense but of course something beneficial to go over.
