1. Below me in the valley rolled a sluggish. 3 stream of caribou, the large deer of the Canadian North. Herd after herd was grazing toward the south. I found a niche at the top of a high cliff overlooking the valley and trained my binoculars on the living stream below.

Shortly before noon two wolves came into sight on the crest of a transverse ridge some distance to the north. A few moments later two more adults and four pups ap- peared. There was some frisking, much nose smelling and tail wagging, and the wolves lay down and took their ease.
