Instructions for Adapting the ClearBow
Step 1: Select the correct size ClearBow
Tools and accessories required:
•
ClearBow ruler
•
Heatless stone
Adapt wire and acrylic work to dental cast in your regular manner.
Ensure that the acrylic plate and wire work are securely fixed onto the cast. This will prevent the
ClearBow from pulling on the wire work and / or dislodging the acrylic plate when thermoform
-
ing in step 4. We recommend not removing the acrylic plate for trimming and polishing until the
ClearBow is fully adapted.
The ClearBow ruler is divided into two parts to determine the correct size ClearBow for non-extraction
cases and unilateral or bilateral extraction cases. The green side of the ruler is to be used for measur
-
ing non-extraction cases and the blue side is to be used for measuring unilateral or bilateral extraction
cases.
Measuring non-extraction cases
1.
Position and hold the green arrow at the distal of the left first bicuspid.
2.
Wrap the ruler tightly around the labial of the anteriors until one of the
black dots on the ruler is in-line with the distal of the right first bicuspid.
3.
The number above this black dot indicates the ClearBow size required for
the patient’s retainer.
•
Choose the larger size if the ruler shows the transition line between
2 sizes.
EXAMPLE BELOW:
Measuring unilateral or bilateral extraction cases
1.
Position and hold the blue arrow at the distal of the left cuspid.
2.
Wrap the ruler tightly around the labial of the anteriors until one of the
black dots on the ruler is in-line with the distal of the right cuspid.
3.
The number above this black dot indicates the ClearBow size required
for the patient’s retainer.
EXAMPLE BELOW:
•
Choose the smaller size if the ruler shows the transition line between 2 sizes.
•
Once you have selected the correct size ClearBow, use a heatless stone to bevel the tips of
the coiled wire.
Step 2: Make your adjustment loops
Tools and accessories required:
•
ClearBow pliers
To orient the ClearBow with the dental cast, ensure that the terminal loops at the end of the metal
extensions are pointing towards the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. This applies to ClearBows for re
-
tainers on upper and lower arches.
If it is necessary to twist the adjustment loops in any way, secure the Coiltight-Joint™ with the Clear
-
Bow pliers.
Step 3: Solder the ClearBow
Tools and accessories required:
•
Wet cotton balls or wet tissue paper
Before soldering:
•
Position the Coiltight-
Joints™ distal to the
1st bicuspids for non
extraction cases, and posi
-
tion the Coiltight-Joints™
distal to the cuspids for
extraction cases.
During soldering:
•
Direct the flame away from the ClearBow,
as it will cause the plastic to melt.
After soldering:
•
You will notice a space of 3 – 4 mm
between the teeth and the ClearBow, this
is normal.
BEFORE PROCEEDING TO STEP 4
Ensure that the acrylic plate and wire work
are securely fixed onto the cast. This will prevent the
ClearBow from pulling on the wirework and / or dislodging the acrylic plate when thermoforming.
Step 4: Thermoforming the ClearBow
Tools and accessories required:
•
Steinel Ultra Heat SV 803 Heat Tool (120 volt) or the Steinel HL 1910 E Heat Tool (220 volt)
•
ClearBow tweezers
•
Wet cotton balls
or highly absorbent wet tissue paper
•
Small container filled with cold water
Before thermoforming:
1.
Cover both
Coiltight-Joints™ with a thick amount of wet
tissue paper.
2.
Steinel Ultra Heat SV 803 Heat Tool (120 V) :
Slide the fan speed switch to level
III
and set the
temperature dial to
4.
3.
Steinel HL 1910 E Heat Tool (220 volt) :
Slide the fan speed switch to level
III
and set the
temperature dial between
4 and 3.
4.
Heat the ClearBow in a
side-to-side motion while
using your tweezers to
support the middle of the
ClearBow

until the
plastic slightly touches the
centrals
[Fig. 2]
.
Keep the
nozzle 1” away from the
ClearBow.
5.
Starting with the first tooth mesial to either
Coiltight-Joint™,
begin forming the ClearBow
using
the simple technique below.
Always keep a formed section (bend) under wet tissue paper when
heating beside it.
HEAT
Point the nozzle towards the labial surface of the section
you need to form and heat for 2-3 seconds to soften plas
-
tic.
SQ
UEEZE
Squeeze and hold the plastic with your tweezers to make
the bend. Do not release pressure.
R
EMOVE HEAT
Remove heat while still continuing to hold pressure on
bend.
COOL
Cool the bend and tweezers together and then release
pressure.

Repeat the simple technique until the ClearBow is fully adapted. It should not take more than
90 seconds to adapt the ClearBow when following this technique.
After the ClearBow is fully adapted
7.
Use a bur or a hot wax knife to remove any plastic protruding behind the two Coiltight-Joints™.
8.
Do not contact the ClearBow with trimming burs, polishing wheels or high shinning buffs.
