Psychological variables
Psychological variables refer to the nurse’s mental processes
and relationships. Resilience has been attributed to allowing
people the experience of positive outcomes after highly
stressful or traumatic experiences, and involves behaviors,
thoughts, and actions that are not inherent within the individual,
but instead can actually be learned and developed
(APA, 2014). Within the Neuman systems model, resilience
contributes to a strong flexible line of defense, and has also
been linked to other positive psychological characteristics
such as coping, hardiness, self-efficacy, low anxiety, and
commitment (Howe et al., 2012). Healthy coping mechanisms
such as humor, reflection, self-motivation, and seeking
of appropriate support also promote resilience and
wellness during times of threatening, stressful situations.
Resilient nurses are more likely to form positive working
relationships, develop emotional insight into their own protective
factors, and find a healthy work-life balance
(McAllister & McKinnon, 2009).
