histor}'. They brought a unique culture and language with them that is slowly dying with
the passing generations. Those who stayed in Vietnam often suffered even more
hardship. Many people had their property taken away and were forced to live on farms
where many had no agricultural experience. Those who were Catholic or involved in the
South Vietnamese government or army were especially discriminated against. Many were
sent to "reprogramming" camps, including Phuoc Tran's husband, who was kept there for
ten years despite the promise of only being there for a month.
