P. monodon given mixed feeds attained significantly better growth, production, and sizefrequency
distribution at harvest (Tables 2 and 6) probably due to the better nutritional
quality of golden snails + cassava or maize. Cassava or maize provided the carbohydrate
for energy and the snails provided the protein for growth. The protein content of the snails
(54%) was comparable with those of trash fish (58%), a common but expensive supplemental
feed in shrimp culture in developing countries (Apud et al., 1989). But high protein
was not enough and snails alone did not support good shrimp growth.
