Participants also completed the validated Brazilian version of the Center for Epidemiology Depression Scale (CES-D) (Batistoni et al., 2007). The CES-D is a self-reported depression screening scale which evaluates 20 depressive symptoms (Radloff, 1977). Total scores range from 0 to 60. In this study, a cutoff score of 16 was established to indicate individuals with a positive screen for clinically significant depression (Radloff, 1977). We had also reported separate scores for the three factors of the CES-D namely negative affect, anhedonia, and somatic symptoms. These symptomatic clusters are based on CES-D factors obtained through confirmatory factor analysis in different samples (Carleton et al., 2013). Suicidal ideation was assessed asking participants whether they experienced thoughts of being better off dead or of hurting themselves in some way during the past 2 weeks.
