Generally, carotenoid-producing red yeasts such as Rhodosporidium spp., Rhodotorula spp., Sporidiobolus spp., and Sporobolomyces spp. synthesize three carotenoids (β-carotene, torulene, and torularhodin) and produce carotenoids at more than 10–900 µg/g dry cell weight.
