The maternal risk associated with pregnancy may be estimated according to the lesion (Table 4) [6].
The more common conditions such as repaired atrial, ventricular and atrioventricular septal defects,
repaired tetralogy of Fallot and coarctation of the aorta are generally associated with mild to moderate
risk of maternal complications. The most common complications are arrhythmias and a decline in
ventricular function. The more complex conditions such as patients with a single ventricle, systemic
right ventricle or cyanotic disease are associated with a significant maternal risk. Arrhythmias and a
decline in ventricular function are more likely to occur, and many of these patients require therapeutic
anticoagulation
