Unfortunately, for the firms in the sample, the exporting process was not a consequence
of detailed strategic planning as would be expected. Considering the reasons for becoming
an exporter it was concluded that this process was a reactive measure derived from
a stagnant localmarket and underexploited internal capabilities, corroborating findings by
Saee and Mouzychenko (2003), and Skrt and Antoncic (2004) as reasons for becoming an
exporter. This lack of strategic planning can be considered a consequence of the fact that
strategic planning had been systematized only by a small group of firms in the sample.
This finding coincides with Czinkota and Johnston (1983) and Saee and Mouzychenko
(2003) in the sense that SMF managers are reluctant to engage in strategic planning.
