Schema congruity theory (Fiske, 1982; Fiske and Taylor, 1991) appears to be a useful lens from which to gauge an individual’s assessment of sponsorship fit. A schema is a “cognitive structure that represents knowledge about a concept or type of stimulus, including its attributes and the relations among those attributes” (Fiske and Taylor, 1991, p.98). In essence, a schema is a preconception that has been developed through experience.
