Managers need to be aware of certain obstacles to learning.
Using the slides, review the LEARNING OBSTACLES, giving examples of each or asking for examples from the students.
1. Self-Satisfied —trainee is satisfied with present level of performance.
2. Failure to recognize a training need — closely allied with self-satisfaction, but could be due to poor performance.
3. Unwilling to accept company or agency training programs — previous training seems to conflict with your suggestions. Or, the training program appears to conflict with the individual’s goals.
4. Does not like the trainer — personality conflicts or the trainee may question your experience or expertise.
5. Previous training experience — trainee may feel performing as you desire will bring about unfavorable consequences.
6. Fear of failure — no one wants to fail. A sound training program will build the trainee’s confidence to perform adequately.
7. Fear of new ideas and techniques.
8. Fear of success – If I do better I will be expected to perform at a higher level.
