Moving from theory to practice requires a focus on empirical explanations of international franchising and the highlighting of critical factors that enhance international franchising. The intention here is not to provide a comprehensive review of the literature. There are hundreds of international franchising articles, and Jell-Ojobor and Windsperger (2013) provide a miniliterature review without any attempt or need to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art literature review. That would be a worthwhile exercise, and the option to do so remains as a future research opportunity. Rather, my approach here is necessarily selective, emphasizing four areas covering what the author sees as critical and possibly a priority for future research. The four topics are governance modes of international franchise firms, international franchising capabilities, global franchise branding, and partner selection in international franchising.
