Intramuscular (IM)
Delivers medication into well perfused muscle, the good blood supply allows rapid absorption and relatively large volumes to be absorbed.
Often used if the drug is likely to irritate the subcutaneous tissue.
It is thought that the delivery of medication into skeletal muscles minimises pain because there are fewer pain receptors than in the subcutaneous layer.
1ml - 5mls can be administered depending on the site and size of the muscle; the suggested volumes are based on muscle size but poorly researched.
