The purpose of this research was to analyze kinds and contextual
meaning of figurative language in Etta James’s songs. In this study, fifteen
songs of Etta James’s album in 1900s have been chosen for the analysis using
seven types of figurative language : Simile, Assonance, Anaphora, Hyperbole,
Personification, Alliteration and Metaphor. The results revealed that the type of
figurative language which was found the most was 34 songs of Alliteration while
the least 1 song found type is metaphor.
