A fire broke out at a Lincolnton manufacturing plant Sunday evening, damaging a compressor, fire officials said.
The incident took place just before 5:15 p.m. at Mohican Mills, located at 419 Gaston Street.
Before realizing the fire stemmed from the plant, fire crews responded to an area of East Main Street and U.S. 321 looking for the origin of heavy smoke in the area.
Firefighters with Lincolnton Fire Department arrived on scene at the plant several minutes later and discovered a compressor on fire near the rear of the building, Public Information Officer Joseph Fletcher.
The location of the incident proved tricky for fire crews who said they were forced to attack the smoke and flames with additional sections of hose line to reach the specific source.
Firefighters took 45 minutes to control the flames and stayed on scene for nearly three hours completing an extensive salvage and overhaul operation, Fletcher said, in order to distinguish whether or not the fire had spread to additional areas of the plant.
Boger City Fire Department and South Fork Fire Department provided mutual aid in the incident.
