PDSA Studying Phase
We initially piloted several cases with scheduled cesareans
that involved healthy mothers and infants, and we modified our flowchart with feedback from the nurses. For
example, we learned that (with the setup of our OR) the
infant’s head should lie toward the mother’s right side so that the nurse can better monitor the infant. We rearranged
some equipment in the OR (such as the suction canister)
to allow for more space to support STS. Furthermore, in
our original workfl ow, the nursery charge nurse called the
nursery admit nurse to support STS in the OR, but it became
evident that it was more effi cient and effective for the
nursery charge nurse to support STS before taking the baby
to the nursery. As we expanded the project, we collected
data to measure our progress. The results of the data collection
can be found in the results section of this article.
