The Salutogenic Effects of Transformative Coping
Transformative coping has a positive, salutogenic effect, furthers personal
growth, and, when adopted as a lifespan coping strategy, continually
strengthens and builds coping resources and positive emotions (see e.g.,
Faull & Hills, 2006; Fredrickson, 2004). The practical importance of emotions
for psychological as well as physiological wellbeing, and social functioning is
widely recognized today. Myers, Sweeney, and Witmer (2000) reported that
numerous studies have found a significant relationship between emotions,
cognitions and wellness, whereby positive emotions were a major factor
in mental health and wellbeing. Fredrickson (2004, p. 1369) spoke of the
“adaptive significance of positive emotions” and pointed to empirical support
reviewed in Fredrickson (1998), indicating that positive emotions have
a beneficial effect on attention, cognition and action and can help improve
physical, intellectual, as well as social resources, all of which are of great
importance in coping and health. As such, transformative coping presents
a potent and reliable ally in coping and, therefore, in the safeguarding and
re-establishing of psychological, and by association physical, wellbeing.
The following sections present a brief summary of empirical evidence
for the health benefits of the concepts of creativity and spirituality. This
is intended to illustrate and emphasize their individual effects on health,
which the TTC proposes to amalgamate and amplify to extend their current
scope, thereby maximizing the advantages to patients. The TTC’s efficacy
can reliably be deduced from the empirical evidence presented here.
