Studies have shown that victims of elder abuse are at increased risk for death, after adjustment for any chronic illness they may have. 30,31. Elder abuse greatly increases the likelihood of placement in a nursing home 32 and of hospitalization. 33 .The psychological effects of abuse, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, and other negative outcomes, have been well documented. 34-36
