The purpose of this article is to give assistance, ideas and confidence to the teacher researchers who, for good and honorable reasons, wish to carry out some kind of investigation involving ESL/EFL students, to draw attention to some of the issues and complexities involved, and to generate a degree of informed enthusiasm for a particularly challenging and important area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) research. The article begins with the discussion of the utilization of English in the real world. Then the problems of teaching English in Thailand are provided, followed by the overview of two type of research methods employed in TESOL. Finally, the possibilities of conducting research in Thai ESL/EFL classrooms are presented.
In conclusion, it could be said that the most appropriate research model might combine both qualitative and quantitative together. Before selecting them to find out the results in the research activities, teacher researchers have to consider which methods would be economical, save time for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.
