To date, very few comprehensive studies have been conducted to quantify trace metals and their leaching potential
from ferrous and non-ferrous waste molding sands (
Fahnline
and Regan, 1995; Ji et al., 2001; Lee and Benson, 2006
). Lee
and Benson (2006)
recently conducted a series of water leach
tests and total elemental analyses on green sands from gray
iron foundries to assess their suitability for placement below
the ground water table when used as a reactive barrier. Because
there is interest in beneficially using foundry sands in manu-
factured soils and other similar applications, data of this nature
are in demand by the regulatory community, as many states do
not have beneficial use guidelines in place for industrial
byproducts.
