Positive and negative affect are instead strongly associated with meeting psychological needs such as learning, autonomy, using one’s skills, respect, and the ability to count on others in an emergency. Further analysis of the same data set (Tay and Diener 2011) found that satisfaction with life was most strongly associated with fulfilling basic needs, regardless of household income. However, positive affect was not influenced by basic need fulfilment and was instead associated with fulfilling social and respect needs, while negative affect was associated with fulfilling basic, respect, and autonomy needs.
