trial 10 piglets (weaning age: 21–28 days,∅7.35 kg BW)
were offered a non pelleted starter diet (per kg DM:
15.2 MJME, 170 g crude protein, 33 g crude fiber) ad lib.
(control: 0 lac; experimental diet: 28.6 g lac/kg DM in
exchange for corn starch). Feed intake, DM content and
pH in feces were determined daily. The digestive tract of
sacrificed piglets (11–15 days after weaning; 6 h after feed
offer) was divided into stomach, small intestine (part 1–3),
cecum, colon ascendens and rectum. Stomach and gut fill,
dry matter content, pH, concentrations of lac, volatile fatty
acids, L-lactate and ammonia in chyme were determined
by conventional chemical analyses or enzymatically.
