3. Results and discussion
3.1. Physical properties of seed
Table 1 shows physical properties of the seeds in the
tests. The seed sizes of wheat, barley, and sunflower vary
within the dimensions ranges of 3.04–7.92 mm, 2.58–
9.54 mm, and 3.36–11.33 mm, respectively. At the moisture
content of 6.2% db., the average length, width, thickness of
sunflower seed were reported as 9.52 mm, 5.12 mm, and
3.27 mm, respectively by Gupta and Das (1997). The shape
of the lentil seed is found to be a disc shape with dimensions
of diameter and thickness. The diameter (width)
and thickness of lentil were 6.50 and 2.42 mm, respectively.
Similar results have been reported by Gu¨ner (2003) for lentil.
He found that the mean sizes of lentil seeds at 6% d.b.
ranged from 2.41 to 6.59 mm. Diameter and thickness of
lentil seed were found 3.84 mm and 2.18 mm, respectively
at moisture content of 10.33% by Amin et al. (2004). The
average diameter and thickness of lentil seeds were
reported 6.64 mm and 2.65 mm at moisture content of
6.5% db., respectively by C¸ arman (1996). Dursun and
Gu¨ner (2003) obtained the length, width, and thickness
of the wheat (Kunduru 1149) seed as 7.10, 2.70, and
2.60 mm, respectively. In addition, the length, width, and
thickness of the barley (Tokak 157/37) seed grains were
reported as 9.30, 3.50, and 2.80 mm, respectively by the
same authors.
