There is plenty of competition. First, the established players such as Sharp and Sanyo have powerful brands. From a technology standpoint, a company like First Solar clearly has a different product with their thin-film technology and the question is, "Which technology wins?" The other U.S. competitor is SunPower, which has high efficiency and a high price premium. Out of the Chinese producers, Suntech is slightly different than others since they combine Australian engineering with Chinese production. The other potential threat is the possibility that some upstream silicon makers will adapt their business models to start producing modules downstream. After the financial crisis, I think the industry realizes that silicon is not precious and there could be an increasing trend for silicon producers to move downstream to capture more value.
