Lesson SOC 4
Task: Identify people in a group.
Prerequisites: ADT 4
Concept: Although not a prerequisite, the concepts learned in the previous task of taking turns (SOC 3) can be helpful in acquiring this skill. This activity is primarily one of receptive language in that the student needs only to point to a person in the group. An additional benefit to this activity is that it leads the way to some cognitive-level tasks that ask for the student to be responsive to his or her own name and then perform a task (see COG 7-COG 9). The only true prerequisite is the ability to point to an object that has been named (ADT 4). In some circumstances, a student may per-form better in identifying objects as opposed to people. In these cases, add the step of identifying objects by a name before starting Step 2.
Behavioral Objective: The student will identify, by pointing to (or similar action), another student who has been randomly named by the teacher to a 95% accuracy level over 20 trials.
Materials: Any group activity that appears enjoyable to the student group.
Task Analysis:
1. Verify that the activity(ies) selected in the materials section are in fact enjoyed and desired by the group.
2. At a random point, stop the activity, identify a student by name, and ask him or her to point to another student whose name you provide. If the student does not respond, provide physical guidance for the student.
3. Continue Step 2 for all students in the group who need help with this task.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all physical prompting and guidance until the objective is met.
