Optical fiber is not wire and it should not be treated as wire. If possible, fiber optic cable runs should be independent of the copper wire cable runs. Ideally, fiber optic cable should be run within a conduit that facilitates a “remove & replace” maintenance concept. “Throwaway” pigtails between the WRA and aircraft cable plant, and the use of dark/spare fiber, helps simplify and expedite aircraft maintenance. If all else fails, the region between the backshell and braided harness should be designed to enable splicing (if “throwaway” pigtails cannot be implemented).
