Worksheet 42: Waiting Before Responding
Sometimes even a moment or two of thinking can prevent words or actions that you will later regret. In each situation, students are to write down their first reaction to the situation. Then, with additional information, students are to write down their second (and, we hope, better) response.
Answer Key (answers may vary):
1. "I'M NOT LATE!!"; "I thought I was on time. Thanks for telling me about the clock."
2. "I can't believe I got Cs! Those teachers are so mean!"; "Oh, I'm glad I made that mistake! Poor Angelica!"
3. "Hey! Quit pushing me, you bully!"; "No problem. (My arm will heal in six weeks—ha ha.)"
Worksheet 43: Avoiding Getting Upset
Some people know exactly what "button to push" to get you upset. Maybe it is a teasing phrase, a look, or reminding you of 'a mistake. Students are to write down one way that the person on the worksheet could avoid having his or her button pushed.
Answer Key (examples):
1. Plan on ignoring little brother.
2. Get a lock for the toolbox.
3. Plan on having a few phrases ready to say to the aunt; have a serious discussion with her if that is appropriate.
4. Ask if he can talk to the teacher in private.
5. When the situation comes up, walk away or bring along another friend.
