We see this phenomenon because technology is rapidly changing and people want to update their device regularly. A new generation of computers is born every 18 to 24 months, so the last version becomes obsolete. It is estimated that about 40 million computer systems become obsolete in the U.S. annually (1,2). This is the main reason why E-Waste production is increasing so rapidly: we have to count the broken computers and TV, but also the perfectly fine computer or TV that are dumped because they are being replaced by the newest version in the household. Those new items are then most likely to be thrown away within 2 to 3 years, when they become obsolete themselves. An update concerning the memory capacity, a new shape, a different color, or new options will make us buy the new product even though we do not really need it. This phenomenon is amplified by our consumer society and all the commercials that make people think they need something new when they don’t (16). To see an interesting view at the consumer society watch this video called “The Story of Stuff.”
